Balloting in UWA Architecture
So...
For those who are wondering,
I dont know why, but here goes anyway:
At first glance - a bunch of unfamiliar
faces, small groups and cliques forming
up like droplets of water attracted to
each other by the marvels of hydrophilic
forces. In just under 10 minutes, there
was a huge puddle, consisting of what
may be a hundred seasoned UWA Architecture
students.
There I stood, like a celery stick in a pot
of thick red hot curry, busily instant
messaging my friends back in singapore.
The feeling of awkwardness was linearly
proportionate to the steady increase of
the voume of that metaphorical puddle.
(yes this also means that the
feeling of awkwardness grows, duh!)
Just to emphasize that perplexing
feeling, imagine yourself as winnie
the pooh wandering around looking,
and behaving in a retarded manner,
in the almighty Marvel universe.
Or a butterfly in a nuclear power plant.
Or a strip of bacon in caesar salad.
Or a girl in a boys school.
Or a mole on someone's face.
Or a bald patch.
Okay, this could go on for ages,
I realised, so Ill just cut to
the chase.
Balloting for Studio is WAY more
interesting than as it was in NUS,
and there are a couple of reasons
as to why:
Firstly, in NUS, you ballot for
the tutor. And only the tutor,
you have almost no clue as to
what the direction of the studio
is going to be like, all you have
is your perceived impression of
what the tutor may be like, from
what you hear from your friends,
or from the little glimpses of
you may have seen in the past.
The positioning of your previous
studio has also somewhat determined
your exploratory routes to gather
insight, or as mentioned earlier
as 'little glimpses'. You may
have encountered a particular
tutor from an interim critique
session, giving you a really
brief moment of contact, maybe
just enough for your to create
a first impression of him/her.
These are all you have to
inform your decision.
Secondly, the brief is the same
for everyone, however, the tutor
may have their own interpretations
of the same brief, and thus, have
different expectations and ideals
for what is, essentially the same
project. I also have to mention
the fact that sometimes, the
tutor may also change their
stand on their interpretations,
mid-way, or towards the end of
the project because of certain
things they hear from their peers.
(This can be truly irritating
and exasperating for students.)
Thirdly, the tutors are mostly,
Singaporeans. Singaporeans are
a boring bunch, if you somehow
manage to stumble unto a tutor
who is not singaporean, good
for you, like seriously.
Of course there are merits to
NUS' system, but that will be
another topic altogether, since
right now im thrashing the cons
out to make UWA's balloting
system look that much better.
:p.
In UWA, the balloting system
is as such:
The tutors themselves will give
a very brief introduction of
themselves, what they intend
to do with studio during
the semester, and proceed to
go onto their very own personal
design brief.
(What the hell do you mean?)
Along with the introduction,
the tutor will also, very quickly
give the students an idea of what
is expected of them if they were
to pick them as their tutors.
Also, the site, programme, and
studio hours are also presented
to the students during their
own presentations.
As such, each tutor has a different
brief, different site, different
programme, different style. I
should also add on that the tutors
each have very interesting and
unique briefs.
It was a very difficult decision
to make, seeing as we have to
submit the ballotting form on
the spot - but, I guess choosing
on impulse is not such a bad thing
actually when all the briefs are
equally interesting.
See you laters, time to day dream!

What does ORD mean to you?
Certainly many people will and have experienced unrelenting, inexplicable joy that might drown their now outdated depressing self. Unfortunately for me, I have already gone past this stage.
I would best describe myself with this short verse:
During its time in the cocoon, the premature butterfly experienced different refractions of the light within the prismatic shell. The spectrum of colors caused the butterfly to have multiple musings, some it thought were credible, some were mere day-dream.
One day, the shell began to crack and fragment. The butterfly impatiently and frantically wrestles against the crumbling bits of the once pristine cocoon, it was then rewarded with a gush of invigorating breeze upon its release.
Enervated by the warmth of the new world, the butterfly then tries to take flight, the wings began to flap and the motion takes on a fluid form. The butterfly celebrated its freedom as it danced to the melody of liberation. Suddenly, the butterfly is at a loss. Without any guidance, the butterfly is now swaying in the air, confounded by its realisation. Winds scaled steeply, sand and dust whirled into its path, the butterfly's mirth was short lived.
However, we all hope things will get better, and like many tales and fables, progression denounces regression:
Nevertheless, the butterfly was aware of and had pre-empted cognitive distortions of its journey. It is now in a state of a molten abstract, though easily wavered and constantly challenged by the abstruse beings that collides in its path, it was reminded of the glimmering showers of light the cocoon showed him. So, the butterfly lift its wing, and propelled itself vertically, now seeking for the plausible muses it had envisioned.
The butterfly is beautiful, and at the same time, vulnerable. It will now have many rough winds to battle against.
Haven't felt so emo in a while =)
Oh yes, I can be very emo =.=x
